January Book | The Sky Is Everywhere.

Thursday, 22 January 2015

This month I read 'The Sky Is Everywhere' by Jandy Nelson.

"Seventeen-year-old Lennie Walker, bookworm and band geek, plays second clarinet and spends her time tucked safely and happily in the shadow of her fiery older sister, Bailey. But when Bailey dies abruptly, Lennie is catapulted to center stage of her own life - and, despite her nonexistent history with boys, suddenly finds herself struggling to balance two. Toby was Bailey's boyfriend; his grief mirrors Lennie's own. Joe is the new boy in town, a transplant from Paris whose nearly magical grin is matched only by his musical talent. For Lennie, they're the sun and the moon; one boy takes her out of her sorrow, the other comforts her in it. But just like their celestial counterparts, they can't collide without the whole wide world exploding."

The Sky Is Everywhere is Jandy's debut novel, but you wouldn't know it. It's written like she has been doing this for years!

"That is a misconception Lennie. The sky is everywhere, it begins at your feet."

I bought this book early in 2014, and tried to read it a number of times but just couldn't get into it. I was determined though that in 2015 I would read all the books I already own but haven't read, before I read the books I got bought for Christmas. This was one of those books.
I was determined to get through it, and give it a chance.
I'm so glad I did. I'm also glad that I own this book in physical form, not an e-book.
The book is written like a diary, and is filled with gorgeous illustrations and handwritten notes.

At first the main character, Lennie, annoyed me. How could she have feelings for her sister's boyfriend?! How could she kiss her dead sister's boyfriend?!

Then you understand, they were both suffering a great loss. One that it felt only each other understood. As the synopsis says 'One boy take her out of her sorrow, the other comforts her in it'.
For me, I think i'd rather be taken out of the grief, than live in it.
Towards the end of the book, you realise that Lennie never had feelings for Toby, he just filled the void that her sister had left behind.

I also had a little bit of a teenage crush on Joe, he was the hot, intelligent, funny guy that transferred from France to Lennie's school and you were instantly rooting for him!

"I look into his sorrowless eyes and a door in my heart blows open. And when we kiss, I see that on the other side of the door is the sky"

This book made me laugh out loud, cringe a little and cry. I love a book that gives you a mixture of emotions, to me that is the catalyst of a good book. When you experience the same emotions the character is feeling. That is when you know you've got an excellent writer on your hands.
I'll definitely be picking up Jandy's latest novel 'I'll Give You The Sun'.

Have you read this book? Are you a bookworm like me?

Accessorize Lipstick//Shade 'Really Red'.

I am a complete red lip lover. If you had asked me a couple of years ago what my favourite colour lipstick was, i'd have told you I didn't wear any. I always thought that if I wore lipstick, especially in a bold colour, it would make me stand out and I hated the thought of that. Now, i'm a complete convert. My most worn lipsticks are either reds or dark berries, probably the boldest colours you can go for..except neon green or purple but i'm not that adventurous.

My number one rule for wearing red lips is to always apply a lip liner! This helps the lipstick last longer and stop the colour bleeding into fine lines. I use the Mac Lip Pencil in Brick and it goes amazing with all the red lipsticks I own. I have done a full post on my love for lip liners here.

As you can see from the list the majority of my red lip picks are from the drugstore, and under £10! You don't need to spend a small fortune to get the perfect red. There is so much choice in Boots or Superdrug, whether you like lipsticks, glosses or lacquers there is a formula for everyone.

What is your favourite red lip product?

Discovering Lip Liners | Beauty.

Wednesday, 14 January 2015

I only really discovered my addiction for beauty and makeup since leaving school and heading off to college. I say only..I left school 7 years ago! Sob.

However it is only since turning 22, that I have realised the wonder of lip liner!!! What is this sorcery!

The most important step before applying your lip liner is to prep your lips. I love to use the Lush BubbleGum Scrub, although a good ol' slightly damp toothbrush will work just as well. This will banish any dry skin on your lips.
I then apply a lip balm, which is currently the Nuxe Reve De Miel, which I originally picked up in Paris in 2013, and love! This gives your lips the perfect amount of nourishment and leaves them feeling super soft.

Pick a shade of lip liner nearest to the shade of lipstick you are using. I only really have lip liners for dark shades at the moment, which has been great for the Winter months. I have a liner perfect for red lips which is Mac's 'Brick' Lip Pencil and a liner for gorgeous deep berry lipsticks which is much more budget friendly Rimmel 1000 Kisses Lip Tint 'Wine'

I've found the best to make my lipstick last all day/night is to completely fill in your lips with the liner, then go over the top with the lipstick. I've done this numerous times, especially with the red liner and the L'Oreal 'Blakes Red' lipstick, and so many people asked whether I had reapplied it, as it hadn't budged! Even after a few hours of eating and drinking. That's a sign of a good lipstick..and liner!!

I'm a complete believer in lip liners now and will definitely be purchasing more nude, pink shades.

Do you wear lip liner? Which is your favourite liner and lipstick duo?

Budget Base | Under £10.

I am a complete budget friendly girl when it comes to makeup. There are so many amazing drugstore products that are a complete dupe for high end ones. If not better! There are so many great products in the drugstore now which are a fraction of the price!

Here are a roundup of my favourite makeup items, that I love, that are kinder on the purse strings.

Primer//Link. £7.99:
I don't have one brand of primer that I stick religiously too, but I did pick up the Maybelline Baby Skin Primer after hearing all the hype surrounding it. It helps create a really smooth base and although I don't have huge pores, it helped minimize the small ones I do have around my nose. I really like the gel formula, it makes it so much easier to blend, and doesn't leave the skin feeling tacky or oily.

Foundation//Link. £6.99
Drugstore foundations are my absolute favourite. Rimmel Match Perfection is the foundation I have been using everyday all through Winter and I love it. In the Summer I really like to use dewy foundations which give the skin a lovely glow, however in Winter it's all about the matte finish. It's matte, without being cakey, which I have found with other foundations i've used.

Concealer//Link. £5.49
Concealer is a MUST in my makeup routine! I don't suffer so badly from dark circles under my eyes, but blemishes are another story. My skin is playing havoc, especially at the moment, so concealer is an essential. I've really been enjoying the Seventeen Phwoar Paint, it's quite a thick, creamy consistency. It is essentially made for under eye circles, but I find it works great on covering up blemishes.

Powder//Link. £3.99
This is by far the best budget powder i've ever used! I get quite an oily chin, and this completely banishes it. The packaging isn't the greatest, the lid is flimsy and falls off all the time, but for less than £4.00, what do people want?!

Blush//Link. £7.00
I'm a little bit of a slut when it comes to blushes. I don't stick to a certain formulation or brand, but I absolutely LOVE the cream blushes from Topshop. They're cheap but so pigmented. I just use the Real Techniques Stippling Brush to dab a small amount right onto the apple of my cheeks, and then blend outwards.

Highlight//Link. £4.99
I bought this highlighter at the beginning of last year and never really bothered with it, until this Winter! I found it hidden amongst my makeup stash and decided to give it a go, and I wasn't disappointed. It also creates a lovely bronze glow, along with the highlight. It isn't too pigmented that it looks fake, just enough to give you a natural looking glow.

What is your favourite budget product? Do you have a favourite drugstore brand?

Skin Care Wishlist

I have vowed in 2015 to take better care of my skin. With Christmas and the New Year having just passed, my eating habits haven't been the greatest. Takeaways, chocolates and lots of alcohol has taken it toll on my skin. It's spotty, oily and dull. Which aint' a good look.

At Christmas I received the Clinique Sonic System Purifying Cleansing Brush, link here, as a present off Aaron. I had been hinting for ages about wanting one, after trying it at the Clinique counter in Boots, so I was glad he picked up on that! There's only so many times a girl can leave webpages and magazines open with a picture of it without it being too obvious...

Having a new skincare toy has made me more determined to be kinder to my skin and up my skincare game. All the products listed are high-end products as I really believe that if you invest in anything, make it your skincare..and handbags. Everyone loves a handbag..
I'm sure there are lots of dupes for these products which work just as well and i'd love to know about them. Need try and save me some pennies.

Are there any products you are lusting over? Which is your favourite budget skincare products?

Fitness Goals | 2015

Honoring The Awareness of The Soul. The Being with the Only Sight of Light is within Body, Known as Door to Heavens. Coming into Raw Awareness of the Universe.

As I stated in yesterdays post, 2015 is the year I get fit. I don't have any unrealistic goals..she says...it isn't about losing 10 stone in 2 months and cutting out certain foods completely. I mean, don't be daft?!

It's about looking after myself better. In all senses of the word, looking after my skin, my hair, and my food/exercise habits. I don't only want to look good on the outside, but feel good on the inside! I want to have a newfound energy, the motivation to get up and go..which i'm seriously lacking at the minute. You know that saying 'Eat Shit, Feel Shit'?? That is me in a nutshell right now. I've eaten so much bad food and just lost all motivation to even try and change that.

I know people say, oh all the cliched New Year resolutions 'New Year, New Me' and i'm not saying that. I actually quite like me, most of the time. My quote is more like..'New Year, New IMPROVED Me'. I feel like I should make some sarcastic joke after that like..HA like I can improve..but that would be lying to myself and aint' nobody got time for that.

People also say that 'If you really wanted to change, you wouldn't wait until New Year' well I feel like telling them people to BACK OFF. Nothing screams a fresh start more, than a brand new year! I for one feel more motivated now, at the start of 2015, than I did last month or two months ago.

My fitness goals for this year are to get my ass to the gym!! At least twice a week, whether that is in the gym or taking part in one of the classes. I also really want to try new classes, some I wouldn't have tried before. I always look at the names of classes and think NAH it sounds too hard, SOUNDS. How can a name make a class sound hard?! 2014 Rachael had issues.

I'm also going to cook from scratch as much as possible. I am a huge fan of cooking and trying new recipes, but I got stuck in a rut of not cooking at all, so i'm really excited to get back into the swing of things in the kitchen. I also got some new cookbooks for Christmas so i'm excited to give them a go. The recipes may not all be super healthy, but surely cooking from scratch in general is better than a huge chinese...and I mean huge. If I was going to order a chinese, I may as well have done it right. Go large or go home! Well, no more! If I want a chinese, I better learn how to make one ASAP.

I'm hoping to post lots of different recipe posts so keep your eyes peeled for them. I always post recipes or meal inspiration on my Instagram so check that out. @FromRachael_Claire

Do you have any fitness/health goals this year? Do you have a blog that is full of tips and tricks for getting fit and eating better, i'd love to know!

2015.

...

Happy New Year!

Life:

I can't believe that 2014 is over, and we have welcomed in 2015. There is something about a new year that I love. It really is the perfect reason for a fresh start. 2014 has had it's major ups and some serious down moments, losing Aarons mum being the worst. Still 9 months later, it hasn't sunk it.

The ups however, have been the best! I've travelled to new places, tried new things and met new people, something I was determined to get out of 2014.

Myself and Aaron bought a house in August, which has been the best thing we've ever done! It was in need of some serious renovation and is still a working progress but i'm really enjoying seeing the changes we have made, and putting our own stamp on our own house. I feel so grown up!

Gus. Gus is our baby. He is our gorgeous tabby kitten that we brought home in November. He is almost 4 months old now and I love him. He's playful and cheeky and brilliant. I just want to squish his little pea head!! I wouldn't though..that would be mean. Don't panic.

Health:

2014 hasn't been my best year for being healthy. Since moving out, we haven't always eaten the best and i'm pretty damn lazy so exercise was a no go. I did however manage to walk/jog/run the Manchester 10K which is honestly one of my greatest accomplishments!! I did ache for about 2 months afterwards but it was for a great cause, a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do!

2015 is my year to get off my ass, get in the kitchen and get to the gym! I'm sick of hating myself for eating shit and spending my whole day watching House on Netflix. Maybe just 3-4 episodes a night from now on...5-6 at a push ;) Hugh Laurie..Swoon.

I'm determined to cook fresh everyday, make better choices and get my ass to the gym. My goal is to get to the gym atleast 2 times a week!
Meat-free mondays are also becoming a thing, before TRYING to make it a more regular occurrence. Emphasis on the word TRYING. For a complete meat lover it's going to be hard, but it's something i'm determined to try.

Blogging:

Blogging in 2014 has..had its moments. I've loved it and resented it at the same time. It's had me doubt myself and make me compare myself to others, not in a good way. I read other peoples blogs and I feel like everything i'm doing is wrong. My photos aren't good enough, my writing isn't good enough, my whole blog isn't good enough.
I've had some amazing moments thanks to blogging, being invited to amazing events, working with great brands and meeting amazing people. Then I feel like it all comes crashing down and i'll go weeks without writing anything, because I felt like everything I was going to write, would be shit and judged.
I'm determined that in 2015 i'm going to remember why I started blogging in the first place. For me. For writing down memories and sharing the things I love with whoever cares enough to read them. Whether that's just myself or 100 people. I didn't start my blog for the numbers, and it's time I remembered that.
I have lots of things planned for my blog. New exciting posts and a schedule that i'm hopefully going to stick too,,fingers crossed.

I hope you guys have had an amazing Christmas and celebrated the New Year is the way you wanted. I also hope 2015 is your greatest year yet.

2014 was sad, and amazing all at once. I'm just hoping 2015 is less sad, and even more amazing!
